Last year the British Heart Foundation invested more than 88 million in research and funded scientists at more than 50 different research centres in the UK. All money raised by Keytek™ from the ‘Glastonbury Bike Ride’ will help fund vital research into heart disease, which is why the Keytek™ cycle team are taking part.

To find out more about the research carried out by the British Heart Foundation please visit http://www.bhf.org.uk/research/support-our-science.aspx

So far the Keytek™ cycle team are well into their training and having completed many miles in preparation of the challenge ahead.  Those participating will have the choice of either taking part in a relatively steady 25 mile route and for the budding Chris Froomes; a more demanding 50 mile cycle!

The Murder Tree

One of our talented engineers Alan Veale has written a thrilling murder mystery novel titled ‘The Murder Tree’.

“It can be murder digging up your family tree, especially when your ancestor is trying to kill you.”

Keytek Local Locksmith Alan Veale writes book The Murder Tree

The story follows Chrissie Fersen who is desperate to find out how she is connected to the death of a servant woman in Glasgow in 1862. She enlists the aid of a local librarian Billie Vane, to help clear the name of the woman who was originally convicted of the crime but her main suspect appears to be alive and well – and it looks like he still has murder on his mind...

The novel is based on the true story of Jessie McLachlan who was convicted of murder in 1862 and famously accused an old man of the crime after being found guilty at her trial.

Born in 1952 in Manchester, Alan first developed his creative imagination when at the tender age of 13 he was given homework - to write a fairy story! Since then Alan has continued writing which developed further as his interest in the theatre grew, this led to a more serious interest in both character development and plot construction.  Since he has almost entirely concentrated on writing theatre scripts, specifically for performances and writing competitions, it wasn’t until 2009 that Alan began writing his first novel ‘The Murder Tree’.

Over 20% of Britons are still leaving their spare set of keys hidden in the garden!

A new survey carried out by Keytek™ Locksmiths has revealed that more than 20% of us are still keeping up the old tradition of leaving a spare set of keys hidden in the garden. Survey participants across the UK revealed that despite years of being advised by the police and government against it, many will still leave their keys in a somewhat easily discovered hiding place. According to Tesco Compare 73% of burglars will use doors to gain entry into a property, therefore by leaving a key under the plant pot or the welcome mat, you will potentially leave your home vulnerable to a break-in and it is definitely an enticing invitation for the average burglar.

The Statistics

Considering this is only a small percentage of the population, it is still alarming that 20% of Britons will still leave their keys in what they feel is a secure hiding place at the risk of invalidating their home insurance by leaving their home vulnerable to a break-in; 2% said they keep a key under a plant pot, 6% under a mat, 7% elsewhere in the garden and 6% in the garage or shed. This is something that home insurers generally advise against. The AA insurance website clearly states this as a warning to all homeowners as part of their security tips, “Don’t hide a spare key outside as burglars know where to look.”
As well as exposing that a significant proportion of homeowners still hide their keys in the garden, the survey also revealed that 44% of people actually keep their spare set of keys with a neighbour; this gives an interesting new outlook on recent debate on whether modern Britons do actually know their neighbours.

Surprisingly only a small percentage of survey participants said that they use a Key Safe to store their spare set of keys. For a relatively small cost it is advisable to have a Key Safe fitted to the outside of your home by a 24 hour locksmiths. A Key Safe is a secure box where you can safely and securely store your keys without having to rely on a neighbour or family member to look after them.

Pine pulling for Holton Lee...

Following on from ongoing charity initiatives, Keytek™ Locksmiths, will be taking part in a volunteer day at Holton Lee located in Poole, Dorset on the Sunday 8th September.

Staff from our National Head Office alongside their families and friends will be taking part in several voluntary activities, these include ‘pine pulling’; a vital operation to stop young pine reverting to a plantation on the heathland at Holton Lee, in turn helping to conserve the natural landscape and environment of the estate.

Emergency Locksmith Keytek are going to pine pull for Holton Lee as part as ongoing charity efforts

Holton Lee is a 350 acre estate located in a secluded corner of Dorset, it was founded in 1992 as an initiative to address the need for accommodation that is suitable for those who are disabled, therefore the charity provides residents with the accessibility they need and enhances their general wellbeing including that of their carers, family and friends through it’s variety of facilities. Holton Lee aims to do this by providing better opportunities for it’s residents and visitors to flourish in the arts, horticulture and the environment. Facilities include picturesque gardens, artist studios and beautiful natural surroundings.
